Let’s take a look inside. 👀 ‘This Ferral Australis’ by John Hinds is an artists’ book that explores ideas of language, history and colonisation. It’s a concertina book, made from one piece of paper folded back and forth in a zig-zag pattern, and is wrapped in maritime canvas covers with a red wax seal. As you unfold the book, you can see where the artist has printed over facsimiles of colonial publications and documents with animal skulls, antique suns and fake ‘Shakespearean’ sonnets. This is

Did your family come to Australia from Greece? We've got news for you! The Library recently acquired a collection of Greek-Australian oral histories, and some of these interviews are now available online. We’ve collaborated with UNSW to develop a new website where you'll find stories and photographs that document the lives of Greek people in Sydney. This is a growing website and we look forward to adding more content in the future. We hope this collection will help generations of Greek-Australia

Which book is your favourite? This World Book Day, curator Sarah Morley shares five first editions from the collection: 📚 Matilda (1988) 🐷 Charlotte’s Web (1952) 🫙 The Bell Jar (1963) 💤 The Big Sleep (1939) 🏔️ Lord of the Rings trilogy (1945–1955) But what makes first editions so special? They show us how the book first appeared to readers, with the original cover art and publicity blurbs – before the authors or stories became famous. For the bird lover in your life. 🦜 The 'Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds' is one of the most trusted handbooks used by birders across the country ... especially during the Aussie Bird Count! First published in 1970 and still in print today, the guide is principally authored by Australian ornithologist, artist and photographer Peter Slater (1932-2020). The Library acquired Slater's significant archive in 2020 which includes around 3,500 illustrations of Australian birds, many that were pro

Could this be the greatest flower book of all time? 'The Temple of Flora' by Robert Thornton, published in 1799, is widely prized not for its scientific detail, but for its dramatic and sumptuous imagery. Thornton closely coordinated the production of each image selecting the plant, deciding on the layout and the background for each specimen. The exotic landscape backgrounds, sometimes completely unrelated to the natural habitat of the flower are a particular feature of his design. The 31 plates

A big book of birds! 🦜 The Library has just acquired a beautiful volume of parrot illustrations by Edward Lear, published in 1832. 'Illustrations of the family of Psittacidae, or Parrots' features 42 spectacular hand-coloured lithographs of parrots, many from Australia. Lear worked in great detail, from the beak down to the claws. He used opaque watercolours and applied touches of egg white on the feathers, to give them a lifelike sheen. On Wed 17 July you can come into the Library and get up c

This rare book captures the magic of marine life! 🐠 'Various fish from Poissons, ecrevisses et crabes, de diverses couleurs et figures extraordinaires ...' was published in 1719 in Amsterdam by Louis Renard. The book's 460 brilliantly hand-coloured engravings show marine creatures in the East Indies. It's the earliest known book on fish with colour illustrations. The Dutch publisher Louis Renard never left the Netherlands but relied on drawings and information from travellers and natural histor
